Mieko Miyazaki - Suizan Lagrost

Comprising virtuoso pieces from both the classical and popular traditions, the repertoire of this unique duo explores both the nature and the soul of Japan. Enhanced by the almost infinite range of sounds offered by the koto (Japanese zither), the shakuhachi (bamboo flute) and the shamisen (three-stringed lute), their music is both intense and marvellous.

Delicate and refined, the duo’s repertoire comprises traditional pieces from the 17th to the 19th century – the most peaceful era in Japanese history – as well as more recent compositions. Often likened to a small chamber music ensemble, ‘sankyoku’ refers to the instrumental trio consisting of the koto, the shamisen and the shakuhachi. This instrumental ensemble, which has become one of the most characteristic features of Japanese musical traditions, offers each musician vast scope for expression, very often drawing on imitations or variations of the same melodic motifs.
